Do we need it?
Most parents, especially mothers very often have to take their little babies with them wherever they go. So if they drive cars, a necessary and obligatory thing which is a must is a baby car seat. This safety device is of vital importance and was invented to prevent our children from deaths and injuries in case of car accidents, which unfortunately do happen in our lives. So every driving parent who takes the baby with him or her must always have such a baby car seat.
How to choose
When looking for such a device a parent wants to choose the best one from the wide selection that the present market offers. Although all baby car seats have to pass government crash testing and safety measures they also have to fit the baby comfortable, moreover the seat you have chosen has to fit your car snugly and your family budget has to afford to purchase that very baby car seat you want and meets these needs. Thus determining this is one of the big dilemmas that most parents face.
As all baby car seats must pass the same government crash testing and safety measures and approved laid down it is needless to say that even the cheapest baby car seat passes the same crash tests and will always protect the baby against crashes.
Speaking about baby car seat safety it is important to mention that every device is safe. And a high price of a baby car seat does not mean that the highest priced seat is any safer than any other. Higher prices can stipulate some extra features which can add some comfort or design features.
Complex features
As was already mentioned, many baby car seats have plenty of special features and that is why can cost you a small fortune. If you can really afford to get such an expensive device to make your baby feel most comfortable during the trip then so be it. It is vital you have to read the manufacturer instruction manual through carefully when fitting a seat. Ignoring the instructions risk the child as to omit some details that will make some baby car seat features perform correctly is vital, so please use due diligence at all times. So it would be advisable for you to read it thoroughly as this will help you greatly and justify the money you paid for the seat.
Some rules
What if your baby weighs more than 20 pounds but is not yet 1 year old? Infants that weigh below 20 lbs. should seat facing the rear of the car. If the child is already one year old but still below this weight limit the child still has to be seated facing the rear. The only thing to be done here is to convert the baby car seat to the baby size. These convertibles can be fitted to face the front, which could be a good preparation when he/she exceeds the weight limit.
All baby car seats can be divided into two types: infant-only seats and bigger baby car seats. But they are all designed to protect the baby from any untoward accidents that unfortunately do happen on the roads. So baby car seats provide security to your little ones during the trip.

Check the physical dimensions of a car seat in person.
When you read the measurements for car seats mentioned in adverts, most of the measurements seem a bit hard to visualise. This makes it important to inspect the car seat in person to check the width and the height to see if matches what you see in those adverts. For my money, I’d rather measure the specs of a Maxi Cosi car seat in person just to be on the safe side because it’s dangerous to buy a car seat that won’t fit baby’s body. The wrong sized car seat can’t protect the baby from sudden stops or crashes. Please do yourself a favour and check the physical dimensions of a car seat in person.
While you’re at it, also check the harnesses for a comfortable fit.
Most car seats for babies these days have a five-point harness that is designed to fit comfortably round the baby’s bum and tummy. Make sure this harness fits around the baby because most babies become very annoyed when a harness is too tight for comfort. A well-fitting harness is important for safety reasons, too. A harness that is too small or too big won’t protect the baby from sudden jolts or stops.
In addition to the five-point harness, there are some baby car seats that have the older three-point harness on them. These harnesses don’t protect the baby as well and should be avoided if at all possible.
Try to find a baby car seat that is easy to carry.
This serves two important purposes. For parents, it makes it easier and more convenient to carry the car seat to and from the car. For the baby, an easy-to-carry car seat gives him the security he needs to feel comfortable going around with mum and dad. Therefore, try to find a car seat that is easy enough to carry but also heavy enough so the baby doesn’t feel like he’s going on a roller coaster at the fun fair.
Finally, consider the future growth of your baby.
Many car seats have special accessories that allow parents to customise the width and height of the car seat. This comes in handy because babies grow at a fantastic rate! If you can’t find this car seat brand, be sure to take into consideration the future growth spurts your baby will experience. There are several brands of baby car seats that are convertible that make it easy to adjust the car seat to your baby’s ever-changing body. You can find these car seats in person at many fine shopping centres. Try them out and see if they work for you.

Baby car seats are very important to the safety of your child while he/she is travelling in a vehicle. All newer car seats meet all the safety regulations that have been established nationally. The correct installation and the correct seat can be the difference between injury and no injury should you become involved in a crash. Many fire departments and police departments offer clinics to teach you how to correctly install your seats and to ensure that they are correctly installed. All types of car seats should be installed in the backseat. The front seat is deadly if your car has a passenger airbag. There are several types of car seats available â infant car seats, convertible car seats, forward facing toddler seats, and booster seats.
Infant car seats are seats that are designed for infants usually from 5 pounds up to between 22 and 30 pounds (depending on the model). These seats should always be rear facing as this is the safest position for your baby. Many infant car seats have bases that latch into the vehicle which allows the actual seat to act as a carrier and to snap in and out of the base. This will keep you from having to “install” the seat every time you get into the vehicle. Your infant should remain in the rear facing position until he/she is one year old and 20 pounds. Both criteria should be met before placing your child in a forward facing seat.
Convertible car seats are car seats that work in both the rear facing and forward facing positions.  This type of car seat is installed in the vehicle in a rear facing position fully reclined until the baby reaches one year and 20 pounds. At that time, the car seat can be turned around and installed in a forward facing position. These car seats have a five point harness (or a T-shield or a tray shield) and can be used for children up to age 4 and 40 pounds (some models allow for a heavier 4 year old and go up to 80 pounds). Many models offer the ability to remove the 5 point harness and install the seat as a belt positioning booster seat.Â
A forward facing toddler seat is a car seat that is designed for children age 1 to age 4 ranging in weight from 20 pounds to 40 pounds or more depending on the model. This is the next step in car seats after the infant car seat. Many of these types of seats also convert into a booster seat.
Booster seats are designed to ensure the seatbelts in your vehicle fit your child. The seats are for children from age 4 and 40 pounds. There are high back and backless styles available. Any toddler or convertible car seat is going to convert to a high back. A backless style sits in the seat under the child and raises the child to the appropriate height for the belt. It is imperative that your child sits in a baby car seat, make sure you are using the right one.
